There is now a new way of exploring the beauty of the country’s northernmost emirate Ras Al Khaimah. A nine-cabin lodge or Bear Grylls Explorer’s Camp opened its doors on March 3 for those looking for a retreat amidst the Hajjar mountains of the UAE.

The camp is named after the British adventurer, writer and TV personality Bear Grylls who had also set up a survival camp in Ras Al Khaimah. Unlike the 24-hour survival course on offer, which was inspired by the 46-year-old’s illustrious career, the new camp has a more relaxed ambience.

Operated by RAK Leisure, the resort is expected to be an accessible activity for those who prefer to steer away from breaking a sweat or end up with muddy feet after a gruelling 24 hours in the Wadi.

“It is comfortable and does not have to be linked to a survival course. You don’t have to eat worms, however, you can use this as a hub or a base to do other activities such as mountain biking or hiking,” says Phillip Durrell, director of adventure activities at RAK Leisure.

Adventure seekers of the UAE can book the three-person cabins for a price of Dh450 on weekdays and Dh650 on weekends. As part of the booking, three people can stay in the cabins, which are recycled shipping containers equipped with an en-suite toilet and shower. These are also air conditioned and offer a comfortable sleep. There is a double-bed and a single bunk above that can be ideal for a small family and group of friends.

The cabins also have a dedicated BBQ area and a grill, which can be used to cook your own food. Charcoal and firelighters can be bought from a shop at the reception, however, it is advised to bring your own along with food to ensure a proper camping experience. Upon checking in, visitors will find their cabins made up and equipped with plates, bowls, cutlery, mugs, BBQ tools and toilet paper, while the on-site shop provides further amenities, such as snacks and firewood that can be purchased. The guests are expected to wash the items used and to place them back in the box.

Check-in times are 15:00 until 11:00 the next day, which is when the visitors can head opt for the variety of adventure packages on offer. The management is mindful of the summer heat and will make the decision on operating during the summer months based on the level of demand.

It is true that there are lavish hotel packages on offer for a similar price in the emirate, however, it does have a unique offering of lodging amidst the mountains in a comfortable environment. This particular resort also falls under an affordable category, considering the prices at other popular glamping spots in Dubai.
