Axar Patel (5/48) and Ravichandran Ashwin (5/47) shared all 10 England second innings wickets as India won the fourth Test by an innings and 25 runs to clinch the series 3-1.

With the emphatic win, India also clinched their spot in the ICC World Test Championship final (June 22) against New Zealand.

England were all out for just 135 in their second innings.

Dan Lawrence (50), who scored a fighting half century, was dismissed by Ashwin to complete a resounding win for India.

2:15pm

England 135 for 9 in 54.3 overs (England first innings 205, India first innings 365)

Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed Jack Leach (2) for his fourth wicket as England lost their ninth wicket in the final session.

Leach fell after Dan Lawrence (50 not out, six fours) brought up his half century, a brilliant effort with the bat amid the carnage at the other end.

This is the second half century for Lawrence in his fifth Test match.

1:50pm

England 112 for 8 in 47 overs (England first innings 205, India first innings 365)

Axar Patel continues his dream run with the ball in his debut series, getting another five wicket haul as Dom Bess became the eighth English wicket to fall in the final session of the third day.

Jack Leach has joined Dan Lawrence (31 not out) in the middle.

India now need only two wickets for an innings win.

Patel ends Foakes’s resistance as India inch closer to victory

England 111 for seven in 45 overs (England first innings 205, India first innings 365)

Axar Patel has done it again, getting his fourth wicket of the second innings as the Indian spinner dismissed Ben Foakes (13).

Dom Bess has joined Lawrence in the middle.

India need three more wickets for an innings victory.

1:25pm

England 108 for six in 42 overs (England first innings 205, India first innings 365)

Dan Lawrence (30 not out) and wicketkeeper-batsman Ben Foakes (12 not out) have helped England reach the 100-mark in their second innings during the first nine overs of the final session on Day Three.

Lawrence and Foakes have so far shared 43 runs in their unbroken seventh wicket partnership.

Virat Kohli has introduced Washington Sundar into the attack and the young off-spinner has Ravichandran Ashwin for support at the other end.

England still need another 52 runs to avoid innings defeat in the final Test.

12:40pm

England 91 for six in 33 overs (England first innings 205, India first innings 365)

Dan Lawrence (19 not out) and wicketkeeper-batsman Ben Foakes (6 not out) batted confidently to avoid further damage as England reached tea at 91 for six in their second innings, still needing 69 runs to avoid an innings defeat.

Six wickets fell in the post-lunch session as Ashwin and Patel took three wickets each.

No monsters have emerged from the pitch to haunt the English batsmen, but they seem to have no answer to the superior skills of India’s two premier spinners.

Lawrence and Ben Foakes have added 26 runs for the seventh wicket. Can they put up fight to give the English total some sort of respectability?

England 65 for six in 25.1 overs (England first innings 205, India first innings 365)

Just when England captain Joe Root (30) and Ollie Pope (15) were beginning to look good as a pair, Axar Patel struck again for his third wicket.

Pope was stumped brilliantly by Rishabh Pant, ending his promising start.

Then in the next over, Ashwin got his third wicket and this time it was Root who had to take the long walk back to the pavilion.

Root was plumb in front of the wicket as the Indians celebrated wildly.

Two quick wickets dealt a devastating blow to England’s hopes of avoiding an innings defeat.

England were six for no loss at lunch, still needing 154 runs to make India bat again.

Earlier, a brilliant 106-run partnership between Washington Sundar (96 not out) and Axar Patel (43) put India in a commanding position.

England hit back, though, with three quick wickets in five balls to end India’s first innings at 365. But Sundar and Patel’s partnership has kept India’s chances of series win alive.

India lead the four-Test series 2-1 as they need to avoid defeat in the final Test to seal their place in the ICC World Test Championship final against New Zealand.

The day got underway with veteran England fast bowler James Anderson bowling the first over.
