Photos: Israel, UAE rugby teams face off after new ties
The national rugby teams of the UAE and Israel held their first friendly game in Dubai on Friday after the name of the normalisation agreement between the countries signed last year.
The first match was won by the Israel Olympic sevens team 33-0 behind closed doors.
In keeping with the spirit of the occasion, the two teams were then mixed for the second game with Israel-UAE White beating Israel-UAE Blue.
The Israeli team were delighted to see Emirati participation in a game of rugby.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Maktoum bin Juma Al Maktoum, chairman of the United Arab Emirates Rugby Federation attended the historic game and met with the team captains. He said the game would be a first of many between the two countries.
The event began with a national team face-off that ended with a 33-0 win for Israel.
Following the trophy presentation, the teams reshuffled and played what they titled a ‘Sons of Abraham’ game.
They described the first encounter as a family gathering, saying they connected immediately - both on and off the field.
The rugby sevens match in Dubai is the latest example of the strengthening of relations between Israel and the UAE following the historic Abraham Accords.
