Andrey Rublev extended his ATP 500 winning streak to 21 matches on Tuesday with a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Emil Ruusuvuori at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.
The 23-year-old Russian has won his last four ATP 500 events, dating back to Hamburg last September, and only Federer has a longer winning streak at the level with 28 victories.
Rublev will meet 15th seed Taylor Fritz in the third round.
Eighth seed Russia’s Karen Khachanov halted former Dubai ball boy Alexei Popyrin’s run, beating the Australian over a tightly-fought three-setter.
Khachanov prevailed 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (4), on Court 1.
In another match Tunisian wildcard Malek Jaziri went down to 11th seeded Serbian Dusan Lajovic 7-5, 6-2, in 67 minutes, on Court 2.
The Serbian will meet Fucsovics for a place in the quarter-finals.
