Are WhatsApp voice, video calls working in UAE?
While UAE telecom operators offer several video and voice calling internet apps such as HiU Messenger, Botim, Voico UAE and C'Me, residents in the country still seem to be craving for the calling feature on WhatsApp, the most popular messaging app across the world.
To see if WhatsApp calls are working, a KT journalist tried calling a friend using mobile data, first an audio call and then a video one. Both calls went through. The quality was poor for both of them, and it was impossible to see or understand anything.
Next, we tried the same experiment on the office WiFi connection. Both calls went through this time as well, but the quality was poor.
WhatsApp calls generally don't work in the UAE.
However, as reported by Khaleej Times in November 2019, the UAE has increased its collaboration with WhatsApp and might lift the ban on voice calls soon.
Mohamed Al Kuwaiti, executive director of the UAE's National Electronic Security Authority (Nesa), said there was now a good understanding with WhatsApp on different aspects.
The UAE has blocked Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls and instead the residents have to use locally authorized VoiP apps such as Botim, C'Me and HiU Messenger.
